Just a little while ago I wrote an article that Windows communication vendors seem to be getting behind virtualization almost across the board. I just saw an article on http://www.nojitter.com/ about voice as an application. In it Sorell Slaymaker has a great diagram of UC in the enterprise networks and says:
[There should be] Physical servers for media--Virtual servers typically add too
much delay/jitter for real-time applications. Physical servers work best at the
media layer, and all layers above can use virtual servers if an organization
chooses.
