Using the Patton Smartnode 4960 With snom ONE and Comcast PRI (USA)

We just implemented a Patton Smartnode 4960 on an exsisting snomONE PBX implementation. The installation went quite smoothly (with just a little help from Patton's execellent support). We thought we would share the SN4960 configuration so anyone else doing it could move ahead even faster.

Download it here:

Here is how the trunk is setup in snom ONE pbx:

#Patton Really Wants To Get Their Gateway Into Your Microsoft UC Implementation #lync

Patton wants to provide gateways into OCS/Lync implementations. And with their stellar support which continues to amaze me on the PBX side of things I think they have a good shot. Here they have provided a lync...oops...link to how to configure your Patton 46xx series for use with OCS:

Patton 4600 Series Qualified for Microsoft UC Use

Just noticed that Patton shows up on Microsoft UC page as "Qualified" and "S+" (Secure) for use as a OCS/(Lync?) gateway. I'm glad to see this since we have relied heavily on Patton as a quailty PSTN gateway for more traditional phone system installations (snom ONE/pbxnsip/3CX) and have had a good experience with them.

Patton Releases PSTN Gateway OCS/Lync Configuration Guide

A little while ago a Patton spokesperson indicated to me that they were working on Microsoft OCS/Lync interoperability. I just noticed Patton posted a configuration guide for Lync as a PDF. And while this page says "Patton Certified IP-PBX Vendors" boldly across the top of the page, I don't think this translates into "Lync Certified". ;-) (Lync certified gateways)

While Patton seems to be a favorite PSTN gateway for some Windows-based PBX VARs, other vendors such as Audiocodes , Dialogic and  (perhaps?) Sangoma seem to have taken a more prominent place in the Microsoft Lync field soo far. But perhaps Patton is planning to change some things?

We'll see.

Sample Patton Smartnode 4912 12-32 Port FXO Gateway Config for snom ONE/pbxnsip

We spent quite a bit of time collaborating with Patton to get this config for the Patton Smartnode 4912 12 port FXO (12-32 port models) to work with snom ONE (aka pbxnsip). So here it is!

Patton Smartnode 4300 FXS Channel Bank Quick Review: Quality, No Frills Workhorse.

Patton has introduced a high density FXS channel bank.

Pros
-Patton quality voip gateway. Config and forget.
-free Patton Smartnode configuration tool for popular PBX's: http://bit.ly/dNseKt
-solid cast 19" mounting brackets
-Patton support 1st rate.

Cons
-one power LED is all there is. No booting status, channel status leds.
-Std 50pin telco plug required to actually plug in analogue phones
-web interface is not very intuitive
-Getting Started manual is (p6) is unclear (innacurate?) how the gateway is to be configured

Patton tends to go light on the frills, gui and graphics. Our experience has been they are serious workhorses that rarely give trouble.

Patton Provides Free PSTN Gateway Configuration Tool for snom ONE & pbxnsip Phone System

If you are a regular reader of my blog you know that I am a fan of Patton gateways. But I've come to realize that it's not only me but the whole Windows PBX community seems to prefer Patton PSTN gateways over the alternatives by a pretty big margin according to my Feb 2010 survey.

Why? Rock solid quality and mind blowing level of support! I can't stress enough how good Patton support is. Just today, once again, I was struck by Patton's unusally proactive and astonishing support. I was talking to Daniel Lizaola at Patton support about the trouble new snom ONE administrators are having configuring gateways for snom ONE/pbxnsip because there is no built-in gateway "configurator". (otherwise an incredible pbx--one you should not miss!) Daniel said he can email over a free configurator developed by Patton for snom ONE!

This tool will also configure FXS ports on the Patton gateways for snom ONE. Unfortunately at this moment snom is limiting non-snom devices. (2 for free, 5 for yellow and 10 for blue) I would really like to see Patton's FXS unit as an "allowed & unlimited" device on snom ONE. If you would want to see this too I suggest you vote for this feature here.

So checkout this tool which will save you hours of "fiddling" and I'd be glad for feedback via comments.

The Most Recommend PSTN Gateway: Patton 411X

Thanks for the input on the PSTN Gateway survey. The numbers are in and it appears that the Patton 4114 / Patton 411X is the favorite SIP PSTN gateway among Windows phone system administrators by quite a margin.

Patton 411X is the favorite SIP PSTN Gateway...by quite a margin...
Several things about my experience with the Patton Smartnode series of gateways that I imagine gives it such good ratings:

-Great Tech Support: My experience with Patton technical support has been stellar. They respond in a timely and consistent fashion to support requests. They are willing to dig into tough issues like multiple subnets, faulty pstn lines and whatever. I'll also admit that each time I call them it ends up being something "kinda dumb" that I did--but they pointed it out and got me in the right direction.
-Trouble-Free: We have had very little (I should probably say No trouble) with Patton hardware up to this point. Just set-and-forget.
-Warranty: I have only been involved in one warranty incident in all the units we'ved shipped and put out in production. That one incident was a case where there was no surge supressor and the in place telephone line damaged the Patton unit. Patton replaced TWO units damaged in that way. So it looks like they have a generous warranty too. (don't count on zapping them though! ;-)

On the cons side I do get complaints they are a bear to learn the GUI--a complaint I don't disagree with. Thankfully 3CX makes a config file and for other IP PBX vendors you can usually have a template config file you edit slightly to get going.
